New demo 0.2.8 update

Hello!
Thanks for the continued support and feedback, it means a lot!
This update has been a big one with some new content.

Main changes:

  • New unlock progression system: This is the biggest change for gameplay. Instead of everything being available in the terminal gated only by price, tools, toys, and upgrades now unlock as you play. Feed the Maw, discover new interactions, and items will progressively appear in the upgrade terminal. Each unlock comes with its own notification. This should make the early game feel less overwhelming and give a much better sense of discovery and progression. It probably needs some tweaks so let me know what was good or bad in the feedback form (or in a comment or on the discord)
  • Full localization support (English/French): The entire game is now fully localized. All UI, tooltips, notifications, loading tips, and in-game text support both English and French. More languages may come later, but these two should be fully covered now.
  • Full controller/gamepad support: You can now play the entire game with a controller. Inputs are rebindable, and all menus, tooltips, and interactions have been adapted to work with gamepad. Took a few passes to iron out all the edge cases but it should be working properly now.
  • New toy Golf Club: Charge it up, aim, and whack products across the room toward the Maw. Features a trajectory preview, power control (scroll wheel / D-pad), collision sounds, and a satisfying "Hole in One" bonus when you nail a long-range shot. Unlocked by throwing a product into the Maw from 15+ meters away.
  • New tool Remote: Link it to multiple tools at any distance, then toggle them all at once. Unlocked by having 3+ different tools placed and toggled simultaneously. This one was suggested by Quad_Plex on the discord !
  • Working on full game content: Cash registers with their own dedicated workbench, slick panels (conveyor belt-like surfaces), and cushion panels (soft landing pads) are all implemented and being polished. These won't be in the demo yet but are coming for the full release.
  • Lazy asset loading: Completely changed how assets are loaded. The game no longer preloads everything at startup, which was causing multi-second freezes on first launch. Assets are now loaded on demand and cached. This should make the initial boot much snappier.
  • Splash screen with logos and sounds at game start.
  • Loading screen when starting a new game or loading a save.
  • Elevator intro with music and fade-in.
  • Observation window in the room. There's a chance it's lit, and a smaller chance someone's watching...
  • Graffiti hints added to the environment to nudge players toward discovering unlock conditions.
  • Decorative props: pipes, cables, fog volumes on tool tubes, alarm lights (that activate when you try to leave before destroying all cameras), antenna details on some tools.
  • Improved snap mode for placing objects more precisely.
  • Better object free rotation: axis lock on small movements for more precision and less drift.
  • "New" tag in the upgrade terminal for recently unlocked items (and fixed some display issues with it).
  • Gambling crates no longer spawn tools you haven't unlocked yet (falls back to ducks).
  • Better save/load system: reworked how workbenches are saved to fix bugs and support future content. Also fixed the game state properly resetting when returning to main menu, and the elevator door issue on load.
  • Performance fixes: Fixed 2 major potential memory leaks in long sessions, fixed gambling crate particle issues, fixed various freezes during gameplay, improved tool collisions especially while moving, replaced terminal lights with emission meshes for better performance, removed camera lights for the same reason.
  • Bug fixes: Press loading issue, automated duck workbench speed not saving/loading correctly, max money going negative at high values, combo label visibility, exploit where dragging a duck back and forth in the pit would pay out multiple times, push-while-sprinting direction, gambling box spawn position, magnet tooltip, various controller edge cases, and more...

The big one here is really the unlock progression, it changes how the whole game flows, so any feedback on pacing is super valuable.
The Golf Club and Remote also should add some fun and be a simple way to make big combos.
The lazy loading fix should be immediately noticeable, and the demo now has a proper beginning (elevator + splash) and ending (stats screen), so it feels like a much more complete experience.
Lots of full game content is being built behind the scenes too. Still a ton more to come !
Thanks for playing and for the feedback !
